Assignment: Developing a specific articulated strategy for a large Indian logistics company

Client:  A large Indian logistics company (revenue ~Rs. 2500 crores or $ 550 Mn) in multi-modal cargo movement across the world, shipping, container handling, warehousing, and deployment of heavy equipment for engineering and construction. The international ocean freight business of the company is spear headed through a European subsidiary, one of the world’s largest in less than container load (LCL) cargo shipment.

Assignment: The Company had an effective but implicit strategy. The Chairman felt the need for a specific articulated strategy for the Company. He mandated articulation of the firm’s strategy philosophy and strategy formulation of three business units.

Project: Guide and assist the management teams of three business units formulate and implement their strategies for growth and competitiveness.

Services provided: 

  • Conducted a strategy audit to determine the firm’s strategy and those of individual business units. Using Porter’s Generic strategies helped the leadership to agree on and state the firm’s competitive strategy.
  • Developed and facilitated a workshop for all senior managers and CEOs of business units to start the competitive strategy formulation process. Each Division identified a number of key projects ranging from restructuring operations to increasing the effectiveness of sales and marketing teams and engaged in implementing them.
  • The strategy formulation process is continuing and the organisation has now established a formal, periodic process to review implementation of strategy.
